14TH BIENNIAL CONFERENCE OF THE SCHOOL OF ARTS AND SOCIAL SCIENCES

Annoucement and Call for Participation

The extent to which the goals of development of a nation are implemented and sustained depends heavily on the quality of political leadership of the society. The paradox of Nigeria’s condition with respect to development is that, we have not been able to mobilize our energies through purposeful and accountable leadership to transform the enormous resources and the environment towards the upliftment of the conditions of the people. This is because Nigeria’s development has been shortchanged and short-circuited by a rampaging rapacious ruling elite with entrenched culture of corruption such that the nation is stuck in the groove of an aberrant neo-patrimonial state without any ray of hope for the people. The stark realities today are increasingly clear, endemic poverty, unemployment, inequality, homelessness, hopelessness and growing insecurity, political violence and assassinations, sectarian conflicts and ethno-religious violence, state repression and general state of insecurity. As scholars therefore, we are obliged to intellectually intervene and interrogate these issues raised above in this conference with a view to chatting a road map out of this fiasco and to reduce the general level of socio-economic stagnation.

The theme and sub-themes are widely spread to elicit responses from across disciplines as follows:
